hi, annie. >> hi, darya. the radar return returns are generally off on the coast and also to parts of santa rosa this morning. the north bay looking at light rain impacting your christmas morning as you're opening presents. here's a look at your future cast 4. by 9:00 most of us in the bay area should be under cloudy conditions. the rain moves in to san rafael, that's moderate to heavy rainfall coming in around noon time. late this afternoon, widespread in the east bay. san jose, you'll probably get it later this afternoon and later this evening. by 4:00, it's widespread. i'm concerned about the potential for thunderstorms, downed power lines. these are all possible today because the storms could produce gusty conditions and we know the soil is already quite saturated from what we saw over the weekend

some of them have been shy but maybe some will say thank you to glide. i know they're busy this time of year but the money they collect leading up to thanksgiving and now, hopefully all that money they get from generous people, like the people here, that that money will stretch well in to next year. of course if you want to volunteer and donate they will never turn you down. >> that's what i was wondering before, what if you wake up and have your christmas, but then say hey, they're serving lunch and dinner, i want to be apart of that. they can come down? >> definitely, up until yestere taking ham and turkey. according to an organizer, if you want to come down and carve for the next few hours, by all means. and they'll accept cash donations today and throughout the year. they definitely can use your money today as far as trying to replenish the supplies they're giving out today. >> nice. that's terrific. thanks a lot,.

let's take a look at other news going on this morning. we have problems in the east bay, a mud slide, near the oakland border on pinehurst road. this happened yesterday afternoon about 5:00. >> basically early this morning as you can see behind me there was a rock slide on pinehurst. we're providing traffic control for vehicles in the area. short ly the county will come out with a cleanup crew with a big rig to clean it up. should take them the better part of the day to clean this up. at that time we'll have the road shut down from skyline to john mccosker. >> it was cleaned up in a few hours of work but we have more rain on the way so they'll keep an eye on the area. 7:06 right now.

north of us in to the shasta county mountains. also under a winter storm warning through today and tomorrow. even powder is expected. all this stuff, this is heading southeast in to the bay area. so we'll all get more rain for it today. here's your future cast. this kind of times the rain out, lets you know where it's going to be, where it's going to be heavy. 9:00 this morning, most of us under cloudy conditions especially in the south bay. up in the north bay, that's where we'll see some of the rain moving on through. 11:00, san rafael, that's light rain coming through. the yellow is the heavy ban of rain by noon for the north bay, and you can see all this starts to fill in here and we're looking at widespread rain, some of it including heavy downpours especially this afternoon and this evening. 4:00, we're all going to see this rain and the yellow indicating the moderate to heavy

destroyed in upstate new york after what we showed you yesterday live on our air here where the firefighters went to respond to a house fire and someone started shooting at them. let me go back and i'll tell you who the name of the shooter is now we know that this morning. william spengler is the one who police say set his own home on fire and then fired shots at the firefighters when they showed up. sean carroll tells us it's not spengler's first run-in with police. >> the first police officer managed to exchange fire with spengler who laid in wait. >> he was shooting at a berm near the home where he can barricaded himself with his weapons to shoot the innocent responders. and i will say the

first webster police officers to respond engaged the shooter in probably in all likelihood, saved many lives. >> reporter: spengler's criminal past dates back to july, 1980, the death of his grandmother. >> spengler lived alone at this house for over 40 years. she was found dead at the floor of the dwelling by her grandson, william spengler, who lives next door. spengler discovered the body at 12:45 p.m. police say mrs. spengler was beaten with some type of blunt instrument. >> reporter: that brunt instrument was a hammer. he'd of manslaught. he remained in prison until 1988. spengler's mother had recently passed away but that fact alone hardly begins to offer answers. >> we don't have an exact reason why but looking at the history, obviously this is an individual that has a lot of

problems to kill his grandmother some 30-odd years ago. >> and we're learning more about the firefighters who were killed yesterday. one of them, michael chiaperini named firefighter of the year in his department. he was helping those affected by hurricane sandy. residents of newtown, connecticut are trying to find joy this christmas on the heels of that massive shooting that happened at sandy hook elementary school where a gunman killed 20 young children and killed six employees at that school. so they're trying to do something in forms of celebrating but it's hard to do at this time. so they're chipping in as a community to lift their spirits. >> fortunately we have many, many kids that are still here. and it's all about the kids. and being with family. we take one hour at a time. one minute at a time. >> and here you can see one

the organizers here. you're seeing a different trends here. you were telling me a little bit earlier, you're telling me the family who have homes, they're here for a meal. >> we've seen in the last few years especially we're starting to see more working poor families, not just the homeless in san francisco. they may have places to live and they may have jobs and going to school but they don't have enough resources to get through the end of the month. so they come here to eat with us. >> have you been surprised that the number remains relatively high, that maybe it would drop a little bit lower? 5,000 is the number i've heard for years now. >> doesn't surprise me at all. a lot of times we're actually pd cooking and serving and giving to our capacity. we could probably do more, but in order to be able to handle it in our kitchens -- i n there. our kitchen is very, very small. for us to really pump out the meals we'd be cooking all day long.

water is back on for 15 homeowners in mel valley. they had to spend christmas eve day without water. it was shut off because of a water main break. flooded marin avenue. marin avenue was closed between bell lane and tense road. reggie kumar has the latest on that story. >> 10 a.m., it moved, so the steel valve and sleeve that were used to repair the pipe did not line up initially. crews had to make additional adjustments before fixing the crack. they say the pipe is more than 60 years old and they believe it cracked due to its age but the break is still under investigation. the street looked like this after the main broke. this is video from the marin i.j. there was so much water, 1,000 gallons a minute poured on to the avenue. some were concerned about their homes flooding. >> the water was level with the

sidewalk so it didn't come up over the sidewalk. >> reggie kumar, kron 4 news. form er president george hw 48%mñ holiday in the hospital. doctors want to make sure he's able to build up energy. the former president has been hospitalized for a month because of bronchitis. nelson mandela is in the hospital today too, the former south african president is said to be looking better and in much better spirits. he's recovering from a lung infection and having gallstones removed. south african president zuma joined him and his wife today for christmas. hope you're having a good christmas so far and the kids didn't get you up too early this morning. back with more.

because they need to carve up the turkeys and the hams. 5,000 meals will be served by the end of the day. so obviously there's a lot of work going on and i can tell you they're just -- they have endless supply of elbow grease. >> keep it coming. >> if > [ laughter ] several days ago and are getting it out there for people to carve up. speaking of carving up, let's show you video of the cafeteria directly beneath us, and all the hard work done upstairs, here's the result. a lot of grateful people downstairs already eating their meals, started at 7:00 in the

tell you about. there was a mud slide in contra costa county near the oakland border. this is pinehurst road. the mud was a mess. chp went out there about 5:00 in the afternoon and it took several hours to clean it up. >> basically early this morning as you can see behind me there was a rock slide right here on pinehurst. there was traffic control for vehicles in the area. shortly the county will be coming out here with a cleanup crew with a big rig to clean this up. should take them the better part of the day to clean this up and at that time we'll have this road shut down all the way from skyline all the way down to john mccosker. >> the slide was cleaned up within a few hours but they're concerned about more rain which we've told you is on the way. so the public works department will keep an eye on that. in the east bay, a road

that keeps flooding has frustrated a long time resident. justine waldman takes a look at the mud slide and what's being done about it. >> reporter: as soon as it started to rain, victor husary knew this was going to happen. so he got out his cell phone camera and took this video of a mud slide on castro ranch road. >> nobody wants to listen to victor. >> this was a ticking bomb waiting to happen. >> reporter: it left the busy two-lane street whittled down to one lane. cars have to drive in the opposite lane of traffic. >> at least 15 years. people didn't know what to do. y didn't know which way to go. >> so it's very dangerous. >> very dangerous for 600 families up here. >> reporter: victor says the problem starts on top of the hill. he claims improper drainage caused it to cascade

down, causing all the mess. that's why victor shared this video so people can see what's happening here. he's reached out to the city, which has now promised to fix the problem. >> look at that danger! >> the mayor sent me an e -mail and the supervisor e-mailed back letting us know they're working on it. they're going to work on it. >> to clear out the road, crews brought in this big pump to suck out the water and mud from the storm drains. this is just a temporary solution. justine waldman, kron 4 news. a 49-year-old man died yesterday when he was buried in an avalanche while he was snowboarding at donner ski ranch. he was skiing within resort limits. he was basically washed away and buried in it. the resort was closed when the rescue teams started searching.

he's been identified as steven mark anderson of hurshdale near truckee. by noon there was the missing person's report. they went in and had to have search dogs to actually look for him because the snow was so deep. finally around 1:30 they found because the snowzwas so deep. it was at the base of the avalanche. the wind had blown some of the snow to depths of up to 7 feet or more where he was snowboarding, which as i said, that was inside the ski area's boundaries near the main lodge. he wasn't skiing off limits which is the real danger. they tell you don't go out of bounds. 8:07 is the time. let's get a look at our mount tm cam. wow, this has changed. it's reo rain. it's going to rain today. we'lk back. >> a new york man is playing the role of real life st. nick. michael scilafo dressed in the red santa suit dy s to his affected by hurricane sandy. he got the toys by social media. he started a donation and he personally delivered them to kids in need. santa, his list in this case was more than 100 children from the affected areas in brooklyn, staten island, and queens. he's actually hoping to turn this program in to a nonprofit and

have another round of gift-giving for easter. residents of newtown, connecticut are trying to find joy after their tragedy leading up to christmas. as you know it's been more than a week now since the friday morning shooting when a man went in and opened fire at sandy hook elementary school, gunned down and killed 20 little children and six employees of the school. residents say it's important to still celebrate the holiday. >> fortunately we have many, many kids that are still here. it's all about the kids and being with family. we take one hour at a time. one minute at a time. >> dozens of people are trying to pitch in community to comfort them. a group passed out hot chocolate, donuts, and panda bears. today you're going to see more different towns on the backs of the police officers as they help

help of course. by the end of the day, 5,000 meals. they're greeting people and i'm sure thanking a lot of the people at glide memorial for their hard work today, as well as for the entire year. they started actually at around 5:00 in the morning with the volunteers pouring in. they started serving the meals at around 7:00 in the morning. here's video of the cafeteria just downstairs from us. you can see how busy it's been all morning. a little bit of the change as far as how glide is doing it. in the past they told us a lot of people who were homeless or without jobs they come in here to get meals. online they're more than welcome. now over the past seven years, the change is that there are a lot of families here who have jobs and a roof over their heads but because they're not making enough money to make ends meet, they come down here not just today but throughout the weeks and months because by eating here they can free up

some of their money for other things. before i head back to you, let's see if we can talk to some of the volunteers here. what time did you get here? >> about 8:00 this morning. we'll stay till about 10:00. ts the real gift to people. >> how many times have you done this?g![ñ;b< >> we've done this for 20 years. my wife and i come down every year. it's a wonderful experience bonding and helping the people. we love doing it. >> when you're done here, at home, i'm sure you're humbled by the need and generosity. >> so many people in need. we're very fortunate. to be abo give back, my wife takes bones from the turkeys and hams and we make soup for the neighborhood for people who need it too. it never stops. the real message here is it shoe one or two days a year. it should be 365, 24/7. you just give. that's what beia human being is all about. >> i tell you what, if you don't make it to heaven, we're all in trouble. >> i like that. >> if he doesn't make it to

unfortunately not all year long. but at least for the first several months or so of 2013. >> i see. okay. so both are welcome. ths a lot, will. developing news this mornio firefighters are dead and several homes destroyed in upstate new york. we showed you this story unfolding yesterday. firefighters were shot at responding to a house fire. the person who owns the home, william spengler, police say actually set his own home on fire and then laid and wait for the first responders to get there and started shooting at hem. sean carroll says this is not spengler's first encounter with police. >> reporter: during the chaotic scene, the first webster police officer to arrived managed to exchange fire with spengler who laid in wait. >> we assumed he was shooting at a high ground advantage near a berm near the home where he had barricaded or set himself up

with weapons to shoot at the innocent responders. and i will say that one of the first webster police officers to respond did engage the shooter and probably in all likelihood saved many lives. >> reporter: spengler's criminal past dates back to the 1980s. >> she was found dead by her grandson who lived next door. &rpengler discovered the body at 12:45 p.m.. police say mrs. spengler was beaten with a blunt instrument. >> reporter: that blunt instrument was a hammer. spengler would be convicted of manslaughter. he remained in prison until 1988. officials confirmed spengler's mother recently passed away but that fact alone hardly offers

traditional christmas message to the world this morning. he wished christmas peace to the world. and also urges israelis and palestinians to negotiate. he decried the slaughter of what he called the defenseless in syria. the pope also celebrated christmas eve mass at st. peter's basilica in vatican city yesterday. here's some video of the pope distributing communion during the mass. and on this christmas day here in the bay area, we've got some rain and definitely some clouds and some snow on the way. not at the moment as you can see live in the tahoe cam on the left-hand side. the roadways look good but it's gray and they'll get snow out of the storm, of which we're getting rain right now. just started to fall here in san francisco and san jose. everybody is going to get a little rain. we'll tell you how much in just a couple of minutes.

with the kron 4 morning news on this christmas day. we're going to start off with a little weather and less traffic. hi, annie. >> good morning. daria. we start with storm and we saw some lightning strike the coast but no bad weather. walnut creek, concord, you have moderate-to-heavy rain where you see the yellow. i will zoom in more and you can see it's impacting the east bay and san leandro. it's affecting redwood city and expecting gusty conditions. looking at the golden gate bridge, we have cloudy skies on the christmas morning as you're opening up all of those gifts and i'm expecting these rain

showers to head farther south into the south baby bilate this afternoon into the evening hours. and we could see gusty conditions with that so we have to watch for downed power lines and downed trees and also area of flooding. let's go to george with your traffic. good morning. >> good morning, annie. we have been watching the traffic here at the golden gate bridge because we watched the rain that you have been talking about coming across the span now, too. we've seen the amount of traffic pick up a little but still not a problem. it's going to be light traffic wherever you're heading on east bay freeways, south bay, peninsula, and for the north bay rides. darya? >> thank you, george. merry christmas to you -- enjoying breakfast, lunch, and dinner at glide memorial church as thousand will be able to do. it's taking an army of volunteer but getting it ready. they have handed out breakfast and at 9:00 now, they're turning to lunch. here's a look at the work being

done. hi, there, will. >> reporter: good morning, darya. before lunch, they will have a quick service. the reverend will preside and then people will get downstairs to eat. they need it because times are very tough for people. we have the homeless and we have those who have jobs but simply can't make ends meet, which is why they're here. you spoke about the army of volunteers. let me tell you right there -- this table, we just saw piled on top of turkeys and ham. they made a big dent but still a lot of work to be done because they hope and expect to serve about 5,000 meals today, not just breakfast, of course, but if you can have breakfast, you can come back for lunch and dinner. the need is all day, all week, all year long. we spoke to many people this morning and a lot of them are repeat volunteers, but i found this gentleman here -- your first year here? >> yes, my first year here. >> reporter: what to you think? >> it's fun. >> reporter: why are you here? >> my friend right over there

recommended it -- sure, we'll get here. my girlfriend and i are here just to help out. >> reporter: let me -- how does it make you feel? >> it feels good and then on top of that, it's been a lot of fun. everyone is in a good mood and good spirits and everyone work hard so it makes it easy to do something you should be doing. >> reporter: right. have you been told before in years past to come but you haven't come? >> i'm usually busy with family stuff but this year didn't make it back east. we're with my girlfriend's family in if bay and had spare time so it worked out. >> reporter: good for you. i'm glad yourself volunteering. they will accept your elbow grease until 12:30. yes, they have people here and there is a waiting list but just in case somebody gets tired or they have to go, then you will be rotating here or downstair in the calf cafeteria. nobody will been turned away. if you can't provide your muscles -- guess what, you can provide your money because the money will be used not just for

today but well into next year and they depend on the holiday season for the money. but they want to remind people it's not just for today. they have needs year-round so any time you can help, they will more than -- be happy to accept it. back to you. >> thanks a lot, will. and now to some problems that we have to deal with on this christmas day. over on the east bay, a mudslide on their hand. now, they did hours of cleanup yesterday but watching it today because of the rains so they hope this doesn't cause further problems. this is in contra costa county near the oakland border on pinehurst road. they had to have drivers navigate around the area and the chp went out there -- they were the first to respond at 5:00 yesterday. >> basically earlier this morning, as you can see behind me, there was a rockslide on pinehurst. we were called to this and providing traffic control for vehicle in the area. shortly there will be the county with a klein crew with big rig and backhoe and

everything to clean up this. it should be the better part of the day to clean this up and at that time, this road shut down all the way from skyline to john mccosker. >> within a couple of hours, they had the slide cleaned up but they will watch today because of the rains. in the east bay also, a road that keeps on flooding has frustrated a long time resident. just ten waldman looks at that. >> reporter: as soon as it startedded to rain, victor knew it was going to happen. he took this video of a mudslide on castro ranch road. >> nobody wants to look at the picture. i know it was a ticking bomb. it was an accident waiting to happen. >> reporter: flooding left the two-way street to one lane. victor does not like how, in order to avoid the water, cars have to drive in the opposite lane of traffic. >> it happens for at least 15 years but people didn't know what to do. they drive in the middle of

this and didn't know where to go -- which way to go. >> reporter: it's very dangerous. >> very dangerous for 600 families. >> reporter: victor said the problem starts on top of the hill. he claims improper drainage allows water and mud to cascade down, causing all of this mess. even these wooden areas can't hold back the damage. victor share this video, so people can see what is happening here. he reached to the city, which has now promised to fix the problem. >> look at that! look at that danger! >> they're working on the problem but -- they're going to work on it. >> reporter: crews brought in this big pump to suck out the water and mud but this is a temporary solution. in richmond, justine waldman, kron 4 news. a 49-year-old man died yesterday, buried in an avalanche while he was

well, it sure is a white christmas in many states as powerful winter storms are moving across the country and could lead to travel delays on the ground and in the air. ed payne has the story. >> reporter: ground crews were out in force in oklahoma city, treating roads and bridges ahead of the expected christmas day storm. it was a similar scene at oklahoma city's will rogers world airport, where some flights have been cancelled. operations director mark crannenburg said the plows are ready to go. >> when we get on the roadway and start clearing, typically it's a crew of 7 to 12 people in trucks and we have spotters. >> reporter: the airport uses a high-tech vehicle that checks

friction levels to make sure it's safe for airplanes to land. >> ice is very tough. if you completely don't have any friction at all with aircraft to land, then that's a real problem. >> reporter: springfield, missouri, residents are stocking on supplies as they prepare for the storm that could dump up to 8 inches of snow and sleet in the region. salt truck driver jade spoon expects to be call in to work, even though it's christmas. >> we just take it every day. you can't look at it as all day but just do your job. >> reporter: the weather is expected to be frightful in little rock, arkansas, as well. they could see 4-inches of snow with higher amount in other parts of the state. there's one way to avoid the travel headaches. >> the best thing to do is try to stay at home and enjoy your christmas. >> reporter: winter storm warnings, watches, and advisories from are from washington state, texas, to new england. severe weather is expect in the southeast. i'm ed payne, reporting. that storm system could

think once we see all the rain getting through, you have to get ready for the cooler air. by 4:00, widespread rain and i think a lot of it will head towards the south and southeast towards san jose this afternoon and so you want to get ready for that. windy conditions, along with the rain -- you already have a very soggy soil and the saturated soil so we could see some downed power lines, potentially, and also maybe downed trees when the wind gusts pick up this afternoon. so this christmas morning, rain may be heavy at times and this afternoon, wind will pick up. tomorrow morning, showers are likely. otherwise by the afternoon, some sun and some clouds. after that, a much quieter weather pattern setting up. here's a look at your satellite and radar picture where you can see the rain has moved on through. up north, you're looking at some snow into part of the shasta county mountains where we have a winter storm warning in effect. also in effect for lake tahoe

rochester, new york, said the man who lured firefighters -- with a home fire so they would come to put it out and then shot them down, had a typewritten note saying he wanted to burn down the neighborhood "and do what i like doing best, killing people." the shooter's sister has still not been found, either, and two firefighters were gun down and killed by him yesterday. here's more on the history of the shooter, william spangler. >> reporter: during the chaotic scene while the fire rapidly spread from home to home, the first webster police officer to arrive managed to exchange fire with spangler, who laid in wait. >> we're sure he's at a high- point advantage near a berm in the home where he barricaded or set himself up with his weapons to shoot the innocent responder. and i will say that one of the

first webster police officers to respond engaged the shooter and probably in all likelihood save mid lives. >> reporter: spangler's criminal past dates back to 1980 when channel 13 reported on the death of his grandmother. >> 92-year-old package her lived alone at this house for over 40 years and was found dead of the floor on the dwelling by her grandson william spangler who lives next door. spangler discovered the body around 12:45 p.m. police in webster stayed mrs. spangler was beaten with some kind of blunt instrument. >> reporter: the blunt instrument was a hammer and spangler would be convicted of manslaughter 1981 and remained in prison until 1998. he completed parole in 2006. spangler's mother had recently passed away but the fact alone hardly begins to offer answers. >> we don't have an exact reason why, but just, you know, looking at the history -- obviously, this is -- this individual has a lot of

problems to kill his grandmother, you know, some 30- odd years go. >> we're learning more this morning about the two firefighters whom he killed yesterday. one of the them was michael chiapirini, named firefighter of the year from his department two weeks go and not even two months ago, he was in long island, helping those affected by hurricane sandy. residents of newtown, connecticut, are trying to find some joy today on this christmas and after their tragedy there, where a shooter killed 20 young children and six employees at sandy hook elementary school. our residents say it's still important to celebrate. >> fortunately we have many, many kids still here and so it's all about the kids and being with family. >> we take one hour at a time. one minute at a time. >> dozens of people are pitching in to help comfort the community. there's a group passing out free hot chocolate, donuts, and pan back dabears to kids on

are the meals and to have the meals, you need the volunteers and people like this gentleman here. what's your name, sir? >> lee. >> reporter: how long have you been here? >> oh, since 5:00 this morning. >> reporter: how many hams have you carved up? >> gee, i would say 15 or 20. >> reporter: are you is sick of ham now? >> no, no. probably about a week i don't want to see it -- you're right. bacon, hot dogs, anything to deal with ham. >> reporter: obviously you get a lot out of give, right? >> oh, yes, yes. i have been out here before and makes me feel not so needy but helpful to the community. >> reporter: absolutely. you know what? people like lee -- and you can see this other group here and this is the third shift -- they have made so much progress that when we got here this morning, we saw these tables full of turkey and ham -- look at this. they made a big dent and ready to move away some of the turkeys here. they cooked these turkeys few day ago and have to carve it

up. they will be serving -- get this -- 5,000 meals. they understand that people need it not just for breakfast. you can come back again for lunch as well as dinner and they always remind me -- they come up and tell me, will, tell people this is not just for christmas, that the need is year-round. they will accept volunteers up until 12:30 today and if you can't do that, drop your money because that money will go to needy people. back to you, darya. >> thanks a lot, will. the water is back on this christmas day for 15 homeowners in middle valley that had to be shut off because of a water main break that flood madre na avenue. it was closed near tennessee valley road. >> the steel valve and sleeve that were used to repair the pipe did not line up initially. crews had to make additional argumentses before fixing the crack.

the pipe is more than 60 years old and they believe it cracked due to its age the street looked like this. this is from the marin i.j. there was so much pressure that the street lifted. 1,000-gallon asmin poured onto marin avenue. residents like becky were concerned about their homes flooding. >> the water was pretty much level with the sidewalk so it didn't come over the sidewalk. >> reporter: reggie kumar, kron 4 news. the search for a suspected drunk driver who jump into a rain-swollen creek has been called off for now. police stopped the man who was driving in sir francis drake avenue. they stopped him for dui after midnight so it was early yesterday morning. but then he took off on foot, jumped into the creek, and swam away. they saw him and last sight of him and he hasn't been seen since. it's 9:35. we'll be back with more in a

well, after a weekend of heavy snow, the skies over the see area have been clear. several resorts around tahoe reporting fresh powder. cliff clifford has an update. >> reporter: caltrans had to shut down a section of interstate 80 in the sierra on saturday because of blaze hard- like conditions but a different story today. the skies have cleared out.

here is a look at the conditions. this is from interstate 80 at the donner summit. the roadway is clear but look at the piles of fresh snow on the sides of the roads here. also a couple miles away, same story near the donner lake exit. even though 80 looks good at the moment, caltrans is screening trucks for snow chains eastbound at applegate and westbound in truckee. let's look on highway 50 in south lake tahoe -- again, lots of fresh snow but the roads are clear -- maybe a little slick here. now, if you're heading to the mountains to ski, it's all good news. to the north, squaw valley and alpine meadows reporting their second-snowiest christmas on record. in the past week, squaw received 70 inches of new snow, 220 inches in total so far this season. northstar has received 54 inches over the last 48 hours and heavenly also reporting 54 inches of new snow and finally, this web cam view from kirkwood, which said it has received 84 inches of new snow

fairly mild today. also i want to mention a winter storm warning in effect for the lake tahoe area starting at noon until midnight tomorrow -- 1 to 2 feet of snow possible for elevations above 6500 feet so a lot of fresh new powder. here's a look at the seven-day around the bay forecast. today, rainy conditions, breezy once -- by this afternoon. wind haven't picked up quite yet but the ground already saturated. we're looking at the possibility of downed power lines and downed trees. once those wind pick up this afternoon, we may experience some isolated spot of flooding today. tomorrow, scattered showers mainly in the morning and i think we will start to dry out by the afternoon on wednesday and will still be fairly brisk with the breeze. thursday, mostly-sunny conditions and dry. friday and saturday right now look like a chance of unsettled weather. we'll see how the models fare over the next couple of days and then on sunday and monday, lots of sunshine and then

the pope delivered the traditional christmas message to the world this christmas. he wished christmas peace to the world and also in his message yesterday, he urged israelis and palestinians to negotiate. he also described the slaughter of the defenseless in syria horrible and asked for that to stop. the ordeals restaurant in san francisco collected 6,000 toy in it toy drive. the goal for the annual christmas toy drive was to collect 15,000 new unwrapped toys. the goal for the year is to

provide 44,000 children in need. firefighters travel around the city and drop off the toys at homes, playground, and even to kid they pass in the street. families who applied also to receive toys can receive the toys at general headquarter today. one gold coin is on its way to doing a lot of good this holiday season. the salvation army in atlanta said the south african coin was dropped into one of the red donation deb s on friday. they estimate that one coin is worth $1,700. >> we absolutely will be able to serve a number of boys and girls and families throughout the community and i want to thank our anonymous donor for his generosity. >> that is the a great way to send christmas with the salvation army. thank you for spending your christmas with us.
